Dr. Hyewon Kang Kim 金惠媛 is the author of 한국문화의 탈중국화 De-Sinicization of Korean Culture (Seoul: 소명출판사, 2018), where she developed the Sinicization Index. She also authored The Spread of Korean Language Education in Hong Kong (In Transnational Korea Series, Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkeley, University of California Press, 2018), Busy Koreans: Essays on Contemporary Culture and Society of South Korea in East Asian Context (Korea University Press, 2014) and 中韩文化谈 Contemporary Korean Culture (Peking University Press, 2013). Busy Koreans is the first English publication of its kind, and 中韩文化谈 was selected for Phoenix Great Books 凤凰好书榜, reviewed by Wen Yi Bao 文藝報, Beijing Chenbao 北京晨報, Sing Pao 成報, China Publishing & Media Journal 中國圖書商報, Xinxi Shibao 信息时报, Wen Wei Po 文匯報, Hua Shang Bao 华商報, etc.
In 2013, she wrote the award-winning Korean book 딤섬으로 점심먹기 To Have Dim Sum for Jeomsim published by Korea University Press, which was selected for The Year’s Excellent Books in the social science category by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Korean Government.
Dr. Kang Kim has published many articles on cultural and societal phenomena and films, as well as academic researches on the comparative cultures of Korea and China. She also wrote a poetry book 사랑할 사람 The One to Love published by Kyungin Publishing in 2011. She has written columns on cultural and social issues for Forbes and Maeil Business Newspaper.
In Korea, she taught at Yonsei University and POSTECH. After her moving to Hong Kong in 1997, she taught at HKUST, and then developed the first Korean program (in 2001) and Korean major study for tertiary education in Hong Kong (in 2005) at Division of Language Studies of the City University of Hong Kong. In 2007, as the Founding Director, she established the Korean Studies at The University of Hong Kong. Currently, Dr. Kang Kim is the Director of The Cultural Studies Centre of East Asia [東亞細亞文化硏究中心]. She is an editorial board of The Journal of Study on Language and Culture of Korea and China [韓中言語文化硏究]. She is also the Director of Hong Kong for The Comparative Research Society of Korean and Chinese Literature [韓中文學比較硏究會], and The Korean Research Society of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Chinese Overseas Culture [韓國台灣香港海外華人文化研究會]. She is the General Secretary of The Hong Kong Association for European Studies.
